Environmental Compliance Specialist
About the Role
We are looking for a seasoned Environmental Compliance Specialist to lead regulatory engagement, manage environmental permits, and provide expert technical guidance to ensure all Green Label Services operations remain fully compliant with Ugandan and international environmental law. The role plays a pivotal part in protecting the company's operating licence and its reputation as Uganda's most trusted hazardous waste management partner.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage all environmental permits, licences, and NEMA registrations — ensuring timely renewals and zero lapses.
- Act as the primary liaison with NEMA, district environmental officers, and other regulatory authorities.
- Conduct environmental impact assessments (EIAs) and environmental audits for company operations and client projects.
- Develop and maintain environmental management plans (EMPs) for all active sites.
- Monitor waste characterisation, manifest records, and disposal certificates to ensure traceability and legal compliance.
- Prepare regulatory submissions, environmental monitoring reports, and compliance matrices.
- Advise management and project teams on emerging environmental legislation and its operational implications.
- Train staff on environmental obligations, waste handling protocols, and spillage response procedures.
- Lead investigations into environmental incidents and coordinate remediation activities.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Natural Resources Management, or a related field. A postgraduate qualification is an added advantage.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in an environmental compliance or regulatory role.
- Demonstrable experience interfacing directly with NEMA and other Ugandan regulatory bodies.
- Strong knowledge of the NEMA Act, the Environment Act (Cap. 153), and hazardous waste regulations.
- Experience conducting EIAs and preparing environmental audit reports.
- Excellent analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work autonomously and manage multiple compliance workstreams simultaneously.
